Beautiful Beighton Campaign 2010

 Eco Friends Minimize

ECO FRIENDS OF BEIGHTON 2010

  •

sunflowersmall.jpg           If you are concerned about Beighton being a clean, safe and green place to live and work then you agree with the views of the Beighton Environment Group.

We are a group of residents that believe that the village (including Sothall) is not always as clean or colourful as it could be despite massive improvements since our group was formed. With your help we can make it a great place for ourselves and for our children to live and work. Many residents will not be fully aware of the difference we have made as a group since forming and will understandably believe that the improvements are down to the council or councillors and indeed they have played their part however it is the Environment Group and several other community groups in the village that have been the 'catalyst' for change and improvement.

Did you know?

  • The Beighton Environment group is an entirely voluntary group working together with the community, local schools, the Council, local businesses, local Churches, local people etc. towards making Beighton a more pleasant village in which to live.
  • The Group adopted a formal constitution in March 2004.
  • We have been very busy and active in identifying areas that are in need of improvements and conservation around the village.
  • Beighton Environment Group (BEG) have been involved in many activities in its short life so far including getting sponsership for bins, local clean ups, helping badger sets, protecting ancient meadows and hedge laying, to name just a few.
  • BEG has a litter sub group which is very focussed on residents concerns over the litter problem in and around the village.
  • Beighton is to represent all of Yorkshire in Britain in Bloom in 2010

How can you help and get involved in Beighton's entry into Britain in Bloom in 2010 and become an Eco friend?

You could do any or all of these things ........................

  • Make sure your front garden looks clean and tidy
  • Plant flowers and shrubs
  • Hang up baskets and plant up tubs
  • Pick up litter and encourage your kids to keep Beighton tidy
  • Sponsor flower tubs etc., especially if you are a business
  • Donate a small amount of e.g.£5 a month to our funds
  • Join the group, we meet on the first (Tuesday of every other month)
  • Take part in our activities and encourage your children to
  • All this is really important to encourage prosperity in Beighton and a great quality of life for all who live and work here.

 What one resident did recently...........

A Journalism student from Beighton called Philip Corker recently wrote the article below for his studies and it has gone forward for consideration to be published by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Beighton continues to blossom after being chosen to represent Yorkshire in next year’s Britain in Bloom competition.

This comes just three months after the Sheffield village picked up a Gold Rose Award in the urban community section of this years Yorkshire in Bloom.

That award was in recognition of the many flowers and floral features around the village.

It also took into consideration Beighton Orchard and Beighton Marsh, which continually attract wildlife, as well as Crystal Peaks Meadows, which recently became a site of national importance.

The two main roundabouts in Beighton were recognised as displays of permanent landscaping, after having thousands of pounds spent on transforming them into Mediterranean themed displays.

These achievements all come from a strong community spirit found in the ex-mining village.

In particular, the Beighton Environment Group (BEG), which was set up in 2004 by a group of volunteers, has been the main driving force into redeveloping Beighton.

Having no funding, the group has managed to improve the village from a litter-clad area, into a place worthy of representing the county.

Among numerous achievements, it has attained sponsorship from Crystal Peaks to have 20 planters placed around the village, and persuaded the council to spend money on the roundabouts.

Its volunteers have also planted over 150,000 daffodils in the area.

Graham Sykes, secretary of BEG, said: “There has been an incredible amount of success, and it is only when we reflect on this, that we realise how great our achievement has been despite difficult circumstances.

“We are relying on sponsorships, donations, fundraising, and council backing to get Beighton ready in time for Britain in Bloom.”

This is only the third time the village has entered the annual Yorkshire in Bloom competition, receiving a Silver Gilt Award the previous two times.

This year they were one of over 300 entries, beating tough competition from around the county.

Melvyn Riley, from Yorkshire in Bloom, said: “We are very pleased to have Beighton representing the region. The village is a true working area, and to win this prestigious award has brought back civic pride.”

Sheffield picked up a total of 21 prizes at Yorkshire in Bloom, continuing to prove its claims as being one of the greenest cities in Britain.

In 2005, the city won gold at Entente Florale, an international horticultural competition, beating opponents from Austria, Hungary, France, and Germany.
