In 2009 Beighton won Gold achieving 'best in class' in the Urban community section of Yorkshire in Bloom and received the great honour of being asked to represent the whole of Yorkshire in 'Britain in Bloom' in 2010.  We didn't disappoint winning our category against stiff opposition from around the United Kingdom.

In addition our chief sponsor Crystal peaks shopping centre won the Commercial award.

The “In Bloom” campaign is not, as many people think, purely about floral displays, judging also takes into account permanent landscaping, environmental quality, public awareness and long lasting improvements etc.

As part of the 2010 in Beighton, the Environment Group encouraged more local residents and businesses to get involved, by tending their front gardens, joining in events and activities and doing all they could to make Beighton a pleasant and prosperous community in which people can live and work.

Sheffield City Councils Environmental Planning Section and Beighton Villages Development Trust helped set up the Beighton Environment Group in 2004 as a voluntary group of interested residents, and continue to support the community as part of a large scale environmental regeneration programme spanning 2004 – 2008 which is part funded by European Regional Development funds through the regeneration agencies of Objective 1 and Yorkshire Forward.

Quote from Mary Lea “Beighton is a flagship example in Sheffield of how if we all work together to a common vision we can start to develop an Eco Community which can be to the benefit of everybody and also have a positive impact on the environment on which we depend.”

We in the environment group urge residents to get involved, we only have one environment, when it's gone it's gone.  Let's be proud of beautiful Beighton and celebrate this huge success, well done to everyone involved.  Best Urban Community is an incredible result 'hats off' to everyone who contributed.
