GARDENING for DISABLED TRUST
Charity No. 255066
The Trust was formed 40 years ago and is an entirely voluntary organization, which gives grants to people all over the United Kingdom in order that they may continue to garden, despite advancing illness, age or disability. Those helped by the Trust include gardeners with chronic back trouble, disabilities including visual, physical and mental health and residents in long stay hospitals or nursing homes who share a garden.
The grants go towards special tools, raised beds, paving, sheds and greenhouses in private gardens. Also we provide help with special gardens in hospitals, community projects and schools. We provide information on useful organizations, free catalogues and books to read. To qualify for a grant, applicants need to become a member of the Trust’s Garden Club at a cost of £5 annually or £30 for ten years. For this you receive a twice yearly Newsletter giving you gardening tips, recipes, a platform to share experiences that may help overcome gardening problems and articles of specific interest to gardeners with disabilities. The application form is available on our website www.gardeningfordisabledtrust.org.uk or from the Secretary at PO Box 285 Tunbridge Wells, TN2 9JD.
An applicant would be expected to provide a note from their doctor, social worker or occupational therapist regarding their disability. They need to contact the Trust with the details of their plans with an estimate of the cost of materials and tools. If labour is required then two competitive estimates would be needed. To make the most of the grant, it would be best to seek voluntary labour which can be obtained from the Citizens Advice Bureau or local community groups.
The Trust’s annual income is raised through fund-raising events, donations or by making a bequest in your will. We hold an annual spring Plant Fair and also a Christmas Fair. For Gift Aid Donations they should be accompanied by a declaration if you are a tax payer.
